Why We Love Watching Dramatic Movies

Dramatic movies: They make us cry, they make us laugh, and we love to watch them! Here are five of the many reasons why.

They make us cry. Sometimes it just take a good cry to release a whole lot of pent up emotions, and there’s nothing like a great drama to help turn on the taps and let those tears flow free.

They’re great for cuddling on the couch. Odds are you’ll want to snuggle up with that special someone when watching your favorite drama on the couch. You probably can’t say the same thing when you’re cracking up to a comedy.

They teach us about life and love. There’s so much going on in dramas, and a lot of it we may not experience ourselves, at least not right now. Dramas teach us about the trials and tribulations of life, and about the happiness and heartbreak that can come with love.

They take us out of our own world. Many of us work a 9-5 with not a whole lot of excitement on a daily basis. There’s nothing like a great drama to take us out of our routines and give us something interesting and exciting to watch!

They give us something to talk about. You may not always have something in common with coworkers, or even sometimes with friends, but odds are you both love a good drama and have plenty of common movie interests to talk about.

Schindler’s List. Oskar Schindler was a German factory owner who saved the lives of well over a thousands Jews during the Holocaust by employing them in his factories in Poland and keeping them hidden from the Nazis. Steven Spielberg brought the epic tale to life on screen in 1993 based on the 1982 novel Schindler’s Ark.

The Pianist. Another gripping tale of the Holocaust, Roman Polanski tells the tale of pianist Władysław Szpilman who was forced to live in the Warsaw Ghetto during the Nazi occupation of Poland. Based on Szpilman’s autobiography of the same name, Polanski put much of his personal experience into the film to give a truly disturbing look into the atrocities committed during the Holocaust.

Milk. Sean Penn’s stellar depiction of gay rights activist and openly gay politician Harvey Milk earned him a Golden Globe nomination and a Screen Actors Guild award for Best Actor. The film follows Milk from the start of his voyage into activism and political life right up until his horrific murder at the hands of Dan White.
